Getting A Cheap Candle Making Kit. . . That’s Not TOO Cheap

31.07.2009
13:23

If you look a little bit, you’ll find cheap candle making kits available to buy. Particularly on the internet, there are always companies willing to sell candle making kits very cheap. But is that the best way to go? Will you be happy with your purchase and have a good candle making experience? Not likely.

Does that mean you better buy top-of-the-line stuff? No! Don’t rush out and pay top dollar – especially if you have no idea whether the extra money is worth it!

Instead, look at where you need to be careful what you get, and other areas where it doesn’t really matter.

Where It Matters

It matters that you have a high-quality wax. If you don’t, the wax in your cheap candle making kit will not melt as well, or pour as well, or adhere to your container as well. . . you get the idea. Beeswax candle making kits can be particularly nice – especially if they are 100% beeswax.

It’s also important to get quality wicks. If your wicks are too thin and cheap from your candle making kit, your candle won’t burn as well. It will burn too fast, or with too small (or too large!) a flame. Many people who know prefer zinc-core wicks as opposed to just cotton, but some are fans of cotton wicks, so maybe choose one to try and make your own decision.

Your fragrance needs to be a quality scent. Essential oils are the best – and the most expensive. In a cheap candle making kit there won’t be essential oils. (Some essential oils are as expensive as $10,000 per oz!) More likely, they will be fragrance oils – a chemists attempt to mimic the essential oils. Generally speaking, fragrance oils are just fine to use, as long as they are concentrated fragrance oils designed for use in candle making. With good quality fragrances, you will only need 1 oz. of fragrance per 1 lb. of wax.

Where You Can Safely Skimp

Some companies will try to convince you that you need a “candle thermometer”. Your cheap candle making kit might come with a candle thermometer, adding to the price a bit. While it is true you need to have your wax at the right temperature before you pour it, any thermometer will do – your candy thermometer you bought for making Christmas candy will do just fine. No special thermometer needed!

Pouring pots can also be expensive. Do they need to be? Not at all. In fact, many beginning candle makers started by using coffee cans, with a little spout pinched into the edge to make it safer. Be sure to use pot holders and other precautions so you don’t get burned, but there’s no inherent need to have a special “candle making pot.”

Get Started in Beer Making: Learn the Basics

31.07.2009

If beer making is something that interests you, then there is no better time than now for you to go ahead and get started in it. Learning how to make beer is really not that hard, and once you begin to learn a bit more about beer making and what is involved, you are going to see that. There are really only a few steps that are going to be involved in beer making and they are easy enough that you are sure to not have any trouble with it.

The Basics

Before you do anything, for beer making you are going to need to gather together the different supplies that you are going to need here. You are going to need a brew pot, one that is going to be larger than your typical kitchen pots and so you don’t want to try it with that. You need a pot that is larger because it is going to have to hold at least a couple gallons and then also there needs to be room at the top to spare so that there won’t be any spillage.

Getting Started

So once you have everything that you are going to need for your beer making, you can get started with the brewing process. Crushing the grain is the first thing that you will need to do here and for that you want to use a large heavy freezer bag and then take a bit by a time and crush it. Then you need to steep, boil, air lock, cool the wort, and put the wort once it has cooled completely, through a sanitized strainer.

The next step is to pitch the yeast and this means that you are going to add the yeast to the unfermented wort. If you miss this step, then you are not going to end up with beer that you can actually drink so make sure that you have this covered when you are making your beer. Then you need to ferment the beer and this should be over a seven to ten day period for the best results.

Now you want to prime it so that you are basically getting it ready to drink and then bottle it. When you are making beer at home you can find some really fancy bottles and even make your own labels to put on them. Once you bottle them you just age them and they are ready to go.

Creating Your Own Wholesale Candle Making “Kit”?

29.07.2009
13:23

Did you know that you can create a candle making kit from wholesale products, and save a ton of money? Particularly if you enjoy candle making, a wholesale product kit makes a “whole” lot of sense.

You may be surprised to see how much cheaper wholesalers sell candle making items. Kits are easy to put together using these discounted items. You can make a cheap candle making “kit” without much effort at all. There are so many important candle making kits a wholesaler carries. You can get just about anything you would want or need: wax, wicks, molds, containers, fragrances, colors, . . . wholesale stores carry them all.

Check before you buy. Some wholesalers have good prices all the time. Others offer sales periodically, so know which kind of wholesaler you’re dealing with before you buy.

How Can Prices Be So Much Better?

Many of the stores that sell candle making supplies are dealing with such great quantities that they can make a profit easily. They aren’t like a little mom-and-pop outfit that has to sell enough kits each month to keep the lights on – wholesalers are dealing on a much grander scale. When they buy and sell on that type of scale, the margins on each individual item can be narrower without any problems.

Another thing to consider is that many wholesalers are internet companies. These companies have little, if any, overhead. That makes it easier for them to sell their wax, wicks, scents, etc. at a very competitive price. Sometimes you can even skip paying the sales tax, as well, so that can be an advantage of buying over the internet.

Discount candle supply stores also take advantage of certain sale times. For example, when it is time to make Christmas candles, it’s a good time to buy red and green coloring and molds that are seasonal. When summertime rolls around, watch for discounts on the red, white, and blue anything, as we prepare to celebrate the birth of our country.

For a lot of candle making wholesale stores, kits can take advantage of the fact that there can be greater discounts if you buy in greater quantities. It may be “buy one, get one free” on certain products like molds or containers. Other wholesalers will offer free wicks for buying pounds of wax. This will encourage you to buy your wax from them – they know you will need wicks anyway! This is really designed for larger operations, people who are buying supplies to make candles to sell. But wholesalers don’t care if you’re a retailer or not – they are more than happy to sell you their product, even for a discount!

What Comes In A Candle Making Starter Kit

27.07.2009
13:23

Your candle making starter kit is going to come with quite a few things in it. They’ll be all the things you need to have a successful candle making experience. If you’ve never made candles before, this is the ideal way for you to learn how it is done. Who knows? You just might decide you like it well enough to want to do it again and again! (If so, you should look for wholesale candle making kits – they are available online and are much cheaper than buying them at your local craft store.)

Basics – Consumables

These are things that are going to become part of your finished candles. These include wax, wicks, and probably your container.

You wax will probably be one of three types: soy, beeswax, or gel. All three have benefits, and no one type is the absolute best. Soy is probably the easiest to work with, so maybe start with a soy candle making starter kit. Soy is also the most environmentally friendly out of the choices available.

Also, if your candles are going into a container, like a jar or votive, you will be using a different recipe of wax than if you are making tapers. For your first candles, we recommend a jar candle – it’s the easiest type to learn on – it’s also most forgiving.

You will also get wicks for each candle that your candle making starter kit makes. You want to have quality wicks, so that your candle will last a long time and burn cleanly. The best wicks are the zinc-core wicks. Don’t worry – zinc isn’t lead, which would be dangerous. The wicks that were a problem with lead were from outside the U.S. Here, you should have no problem finding zinc-core wicks. They are better than cotton (which smoke and aren’t as hot). When a zinc-core wicked candle burns, it burns to the bottom – which is more than many other types of wicks can say.

There also need to be enough wicks for the size of the candle. That will generally be dictated by the candle making starter kit – how many they choose to include for each candle.

There should also be fragrance for your candles. Sometimes you can choose which scent you get – particularly if you buy your candle making starter kit over the internet, where they are more able to personalize your kit.

Coloring is also a part of your kit. Like with fragrance, you probably will be able to choose the color you want to make your candle.

Why Choose A Soy Candle Making Kit?

25.07.2009
13:23

If you want to choose a candle making kit, consider soy! Soy has so many benefits – it is useful to take a look at them before you choose a candle making starter kit at all.

What other options are there? Gel, beeswax – sure, there are other choices. But in many ways, soy candles are better than them all. Soy candles are made from the natural oil from the soybean plant, with a pleasant, natural scent.

Lower Melting Point

Soy wax melts at a lower temperature. Why is that important? There are two good reasons you want a wax with a lower melting point.

First, a lower melting point means that your candle can be poured sooner. Less time spent stirring over the hot stove, and more time enjoying the “fruits of your labor” – or a cold lemonade out on the front porch.

Also, a lower melting point means you are less likely to get burned while using your soy candle making kit. It’s fun to try something new, to have a new hobby – but the fun ends if you get burned in the process! That’s a lot less likely to happen to you when you’re learning to make candles with your soy candle making kit.

Born In The USA

Soybeans are grown right here in our United States; making buying soy candle making kits are good thing for our country. Whether you are only making four candles or going into the business professionally, buying soy helps our country.

Generally speaking, soy beans are grown on small family farms – those same family farms that have been the backbone of our American society for generations. Whatever we can do to help the farmers is usually worth doing.

Great Visual Appeal

Soy wax is known for its excellence at adhering to containers. This is a plus when it comes to making beautiful candles – whether the soy candle making kit is for yourself to keep or you’re making gifts, you want a lovely end product.

Soy wax also has a very even texture. It isn’t tricky to get a good look to the wax, and it is easy for even beginning candle makers to get a good candle. When you’re new to a hobby, it is good to have easier raw materials to work with. Maybe later you’ll want to move along to a different type of wax, such as beeswax or gel, but for starting out, nothing beats soy wax.

Clean Burning, Last Longer

Soy candles are very clean burning and they last longer than traditional candles, making them a smart choice. Make your candle making kit one of soy!

Buying A Candle Making Kit? What You Should Know

23.07.2009
13:23

If you love candles and are ready to try making them yourself, a good way to start is by buying a candle making kit. They are available in craft stores and online, in various types (gel, beeswax, or soy candle making kits are popular) and colors. They often cost less than $25 for a kit that makes 4 candles, though prices vary.

What Comes In A Candle Making Kit

When you buy a candle making kit, it should come with all the materials you need. It should have the wax and wicks, of course. (Also wick stickers to keep the wicks upright in the container as they cool.) It should also come with the containers to make the candles, for example, jars or molds.

There usually is also some aspects of the candle making kit that you have some control over, particularly if you buy a kit from online, where they will assemble it to your specifications. You can choose the color of the candle and the scent.

Most websites offer at least 50 different scents. These can range from almond to woodland orange spice, with every scent you can imagine in between. Some offer more than one scent per kit, so that some of your candles can be (for example) cucumber aloe and others can be vanilla raspberry. It’s totally up to you to select the scents that you want.

As for colors, most websites have at least 20 choices. They include royal blue, peach, hunter green, etc. Often the kit will allow you at least two choices for colors. The wax comes in a colorfree or white block, and the color makes it the color you envisioned.

Kits also generally include instructions. If it is your first time making candles, these will be invaluable! Be sure to follow their hints and tips, as the experts wrote them.

What Else You May Need

There are other things that don’t come in the candle making kit but you will need. They are tools that are reusable with every batch of candles – you buy them once and they’re yours forever.

These include things like a pot to melt the wax in. It needs to have a pour spout. Some people prefer the small, 1 lb pot, others like the large, 4 lb pouring pot. The larger one is often just a few dollars more, and makes it so you can do more candles in a shorter amount of time. Think about what you want to do, then buy the size that is right for your needs. (For starting out, some experts suggest just using a coffee can that has a pour spout bent into the edge – might be worth a try before paying for a fancy pot!)

You can also get a candle thermometer for a few more dollars. This is so that you will get the wax to the right temperature. Any candy thermometer will do just fine. Many problems are caused by trying to pour the candle at the wrong temperature. The thermometer will help you with that.

As time goes on, new ways of making candles come about, and now there are the gel candles which burn much cleaner and which are now preferred by most, especially in comparison to the beeswax candle making supplies and candles.

You really want to choose a container that is going to compliment the candle, so think color and texture here. This is really going to make or break the candle in the end, and especially if you are going to be selling these candles, you need to make sure that they look as best as possible.

Now you want to make the candle, and remember that the most important part is that the wick is put in right here, otherwise when you are done, the candle is not going to burn properly and is going to be useless.

It can take some practice if you are new to making gel candles or any other type for that matter. Choosing your gel candle making supplies is one thing but if you have never actually tried it before, then you should not get frustrated if you are not getting the hang of it right away. It is going to take some practice, and as you make candles and you really start to get experienced at it, you will find it easier and easier every time.
