Magic Tricks Especially Suited For Beginners

Probably every kid goes through a stage where they want to grow up to be a magician. Something about being able to surprise and astound people is appealing. So how does one become a magician and what are some good magic tricks for a beginner?

Maybe the best way to know which tricks are easy for a beginner is to look at what can make a trick hard. For many magicians who are new, remembering the script they figured out ahead of time (that goes along with the effect) can be difficult. If the effect calls for a special type of shuffle, or memorizing cards, or forcing certain cards, it can be almost impossible for the trick to be performed successfully, until the magician is much more experienced. It is precisely these things – which, to the average, untrained eye are impossible – that make these more difficult tricks absolutely amazing.

But there is hope for a new magician. There are places to get tricks, and ways to learn more tricks. Let’s take a look at several ways for beginning magicians to learn magic tricks.

Books And DVDs Are Available

Your local library is an excellent source to find books on magic tricks for the beginning prestidigitator. With a minimal amount of stage skills, a good magic trick for the beginner should be simple and easy to perform.

Another source of good magic tricks for the beginner is the local joke and magic shop. There the beginning conjurer can find books, self-working effects, and dvds showing the exact methods on how to perform the effects as well as the “patter” or story that goes along with the affect.

Birds Of A Feather – Meeting With Other Magicians

The Society of American Magicians meets monthly in local “assemblies”and can provide both opportunities to perform and instruction by seasoned performers. Each month they provide some great illusions and magic tricks for the beginner that even professional magicians perform. Each month they have a show that gives the beginning magician a chance to perform their new tricks. This is a great opportunity for the budding magician to get more practice, especially with street magic that can be practiced practically anywhere.

Some easy magic tricks for the beginner include “The Invisible Deck” and “The Magicians Insurance Policy”. They come with the things needed to perform it successfully, and other than learning the patter, generally are simple to learn and perform.

In time, and with practice, these beginning magic tricks can be performed effortlessly and professionally.

The key to feeling comfortable performing is to perform often. Soon the magic tricks for the beginning magician will seem professional and will astound any audience.

Simple Magic Tricks – And Everyday Places To Perform Them

So you want to learn a simple magic trick or two, but you aren’t sure how, or where you’d be able to perform them once you’ve got it down pat. There’s help for that – things that will help you learn and remember how to do a simple magic trick, and terrific places to show off your new-found skills.

Learning A Trick – Making It Simple

Just because a magic trick for beginners is simple to learn doesn’t mean it is easy to understand the first time around. Once you’ve chosen which trick you want to learn, read through the instructions a time or two to get a feeling for the way the trick is structured. Then, work through the effect step-by-step, either reading the patter – or story – aloud as you do the trick, or just reading it silently, while you figure out what goes where and how to get the right card in the right place at the right time. Repeat this process until it works the way it is supposed to. Now, just practice it several times until it is easy for you to do. Practice is what will make it easier to feel comfortable performing for your friends and neighbors.

Now That You’ve Got It…

Once you feel comfortable with the simple magic trick you’ve learned, you need to find ways to perform it more often. There are several ways this can work. First of all, recognize that many everyday situations could have magic inserted in them – where you hadn’t thought about magic at all. The classic example is the magician who pulls a coin from the ear of someone just as a matter of course. It is just something he does to get a reaction from the people around him – and usually, they love it.

Think about doing your simple magic trick on a date! The girl or guy you are with will probably be impressed that you know magic at all, and also impressed that you would be bold enough to try it while you’re waiting for your dinner to arrive at your table. It can show that you exude confidence in your abilities – a very attractive quality!

Performing your simple magic trick or two at a party is always a big hit. People love to see magic tricks, and a party is no exception. You may gather a bigger audience than you planned on – but that’s alright.

People will be delighted to discover you know magic. Their enthusiasm will encourage you to learn even more magic tricks – simple, or more difficult. After that – the sky’s the limit!

What Can You Find In A Magic Trick Store?

21.02.2009
21:36

Everybody is intrigued by a store that sells magic tricks. What could be inside? From the window, you can see many things inside – but it’s hard to tell what’s really in there. Should you venture inside? Would you learn how the tricks are done – the explanation behind the magic? What could you discover? Is there stuff you would be interested in buying, if you knew it exists? Do they even let non-magicians go in?

For Those Interested In Corny Gag

If you like practical jokes and gags, you can often find a lot of those types of products in a store that sells magic tricks. There will likely be fake dog droppings, or artificial vomit, destined to gross someone out. There will probably also be whoopie cushions – since “everybody” knows someone they want to spring that gag on. And in among the colorful gags and grossities, there will be the magic effects.

For The New Magician

People who are just getting started in magic need tricks that are less likely to get messed up if the nervous magician forgets something he meant to say or do. These tricks, collectively, are known as “self-working tricks”. They are a forgiving bunch of simple tricks; and any magic store will have several for sale. There will also be plenty of packs of face cards. Usually there will be a few different kinds – those that are specially-designed to perform certain tricks, and others that are just plain, ordinary cards.

For The Experienced Magician

Those who have been performing magic for quite a while already are familiar with the old favorites that new magicians are just learning. They’ve already got a set of cups and balls, or linking rings, and they’ve got a broken in deck of “Bee” cards to use when they play Three Card Monte with an unsuspecting victim – I mean customer. They aren’t on the lookout for the usual tricks – the experienced magician needs something new.

So when the experienced magician enters a store that sells magic tricks, he is on the lookout for something he hasn’t seen before. Maybe it is a special effect that has been shown in Genie magazine. Or maybe it is something special that the store owner worked up and is selling on a small scale to see how good the reception is before he launches production on a full scale. Those are the gems that the older magician is hoping to find when he goes into a store that sells magic tricks.

The Best Magic Trick – Will You Know It When You See It?

19.02.2009
21:36

So you go to a magic show, and among all the effects that the magician does, there was one that just blew you away. It knocked your socks off, it stun you – it left you with your jaw on the floor, saying “How did he DO that?” Chances are, you came away saying that was the “best magic trick” you’ve ever seen.

What are the qualities to watch for, when you’re picking what you feel is the best magic trick? What are the things that stand out?

Don’t Stop!

The first, most obvious thing that shows it was the best magic trick is that you don’t want it to end. Or you want to see it again. And again. And, though that magician may not be willing to perform it again right then, when you do see it again, you will be, once again, mesmerized and delighted.

Surprises!

Magic tricks that are best are the ones that have some surprise to them. The ending is different than you thought it would be, or there’s a twist to it you didn’t expect. Perhaps she did the cups and balls with diamonds at the end, or a lemon or apple. Maybe instead of sawing a woman in half, she stands up in a box that divides into pieces. Or when you thought the stuffed cat would turn into a real cat, instead it is a woman with a cat mask on. There are many surprises that can happen when a magician applies creativity to the standard effects he’s been doing the classic way, or to effects he bought at a magic trick store.

Skill And Expertise Matter

Technical skill matters if a trick is to be the best magic trick. If a magician stumbles on his words, or fumbles the cards, sometimes it ruins the whole effect. But if he has practiced his magic trick so many times that it is second nature to him, he won’t be thrown off when his assistant from the audience makes a mistake, or when there’s a ruffian in the audience who tries to mess him up. He can easily recover, get back to the right patter (story that goes with the effect), and still amaze his audience.

He’s also good at the misdirection that is a part of any magic trick. Best, is if you don’t even realize he’s applying misdirection with his hand motions or movement of wand or glass, or your hand, etc. But even if you know there has to be some misdirection, it is of the kind where you don’t realize it until it is too late.

The Most Effective Magic Tricks For Kids Parties

17.02.2009
21:36

There’s nothing like bringing in a magician for a birthday or school party to add to the level of excitement and enjoyment for the event. Children, with their vivid imaginations seem to thrive as audience members in a magic show. Magic can hold children spellbound and it seems to delight their young minds as they try to figure out how the magician was able to fool their senses.

The best magic tricks for kids usually include those effects that involve them. If the magician can use some of the children to participate in his act, these can be some of the best magic tricks. Children feel important and special when the magician asks them to “say the magic words” or to “wave their magic wand,” especially in front of their friends.

Children are inquisitive and notice every move the magician will make. It’s important for the magician to use his art of misdirection to distract the attention of the kids so that they are unaware of “how” the effect was performed. The best magic tricks for kids leave them amazed and full of wonderment.

Some of the best magic tricks for kids also involve the use of small animals such as baby chicks appearing from under a set of cups where small red balls used to be. Or the classic of all magic tricks – which is pulling a rabbit from a top hat that minutes ago was shown to be empty. Kids like magic tricks that are colorful and noisy. Clinking rings and flashing lights can hold their attention.

Magic tricks for kids are best when they engage the children and have them laughing and truly enjoying the performance. If a magician uses one of the parents and allows the children to be a part of his affect to fool the parent and then makes it as if the kids are friends of the magician, this can be particularly effective.

Finding the best magician for kids magic tricks means finding someone that specializes in “kid magic” as he or she will have the temperament to play to the minds of the young children. Kids magic is best when it’s simple yet fast paced since their attention spans have not yet developed completely.

A talented magician will leave the children spellbound, wanting to know “how it’s done” and even pretending to be the magician. Many a professional magicians today were influenced as children years before, seeing a magician performing a simple magic trick.

Making Magic Tricks Easy To Learn – Yes, It Is Possible!

15.02.2009
21:36

If you’re a budding magician, you need to learn magic tricks. The easiest way to learn them is to follow this simple five-part method. Whether your magic trick is easy or more difficult, getting to the point where you can perform it for others can be simpler than you thought. Whether your magic trick is for kids or adults, these steps can help you become confident and skilled.

First – Get It All Together

In the most obvious first move, you need to be sure you have everything that your magic trick requires. Easy or hard as the trick is, all the materials are needed. Whether it is a deck of cards, or a dollar bill and a lemon, or a silk and your hand, have available the items that are needed to successfully complete the effect.

Read It Through

Next, read through the usually easy directions for the magic trick. If the writer of the directions did a good job, one part flows into the other, and the explainations are clear. If not, you may need to read it through a second or third time. Whatever it takes, make sure you have the gist of how the effect flows. Does the magic trick use cards, easy to watch but tricky to do? Understand how those aces get back to the top. Is it a coin effect, where they disappear from one hand and appear under another? Know how the magic wand makes that happen.

Practice Slowly, Then Practice Faster

Now is the time to actually put the hands in motion. Following the directions carefully, try the magic effect as best you can. If some part doesn’t work, try it again until it does. Practice again, gradually increasing the speed and ease with which you can do the trick.

Learn The Patter

The “patter” is the words that go along with the magic trick. Unless you plan to do your magic trick silently – not as easy as it sounds – you will need to learn what words work best with your trick. You need to say things that lead your audience along in the story, or that tell the half-truths that “fit” with what you’re showing them, but doesn’t give them too much information. Often, the book you are learning the magic trick from gives the easy patter to use. If so, feel free to memorize it.

Putting It All Together

Once you’ve got the hand motions, and learned the patter, all that’s left is to put it all together. Again, starting slowly and gradually increasing as you get more comfortable, work your way through it.

Before you know it, after probably dozens of tries, your magic trick will look easy – just the way it is supposed to appear to the audience!

What’s Your Favorite Type Of Magic Trick?

13.02.2009
21:36

Most people love magic. Whether it is on the television or up front in a show room, it is still a very entertaining event. The fact that you are right there, watching so closely, and still are stunned and surprised by what the magician does is something that never gets old. You would think being there in front of the magician would give you an advantage – but it rarely does. You’re amazed again!

All kinds of magic is entertaining, but most people have a favorite type of magic trick. There’s usually one kind that seems more spectacular, or more amazing, than another kind. Which kind is it for you?

Close-up Magic – When You’re Right There

Magic tricks that are performed on a table – often green, with fringe over the edge – are considered “close-up magic”. These tricks take advantage of both the proximity of the audience and the table as a surface to work on. Close-up magic can also be done by strolling magicians, but they generally do card or coin tricks that don’t need a table to work on.

Which effects are used for close-up magic? Common close-up magic tricks are also some of the most familiar – card tricks work well, as do coin tricks. When you see close-up magic, you usually feel that you will see how it is done – which is something that people think is an accomplishment.

Parlor Magic – Like The Good Old Days

Back decades ago, people hosting a party in their home would often have a magician perform for their guests. The magician would stand up in front of the room and the guests would face the magician. Since the audience is further away, usually the effects aren’t performed on a small table, as they can be with close-up magic. The effects need to be bigger, and not need a table. Common magic tricks easy to perform as parlor magic are feats of mentalism, magic squares (math magic), and the linking rings.

Palace Magic – Smoke And Mirrors, Live Animals

The largest venue for magic tricks is the stage show, often referred to as “palace magic.” That’s the type they often show on television. This type of magic show needs to feature large effects, ones that can more easily be seen by a large audience. Generally speaking, card tricks and coin tricks have no place here, as they wouldn’t be able to be appreciated by the vast majority of the audience. Some sample magic tricks of this type are metamorphosis (where the magician and the assistant change places in the blink of an eye), and making something appear or disappear. Sawing a woman in half, levitations, and larger, drama-like shows that incorporate magic tricks also are common in this type of setting.

Magic Tricks Revealed for Free

If you want to find magic tricks revealed free of charge, there are two places you can go, the public library or the Internet. This article will look at both in turn.

Books Revealing Magic Tricks – Free at Your Library

If you want to borrow a book revealing magic tricks free of charge, go to your local library and type the keywords “magic tricks” into the library’s online catalog. Most public library systems also allow you to access their catalog from home.

The bestselling book on magic and illusion on Amazon.com is Derren Brown’s Tricks of the Mind. Brown is a popular television illusionist and his book guides the reader into some of the techniques behind what he does on TV. What it doesn’t do, unsurprisingly, is reveal step by step details of how to replicate his tricks. To do so would damage his reputation and “devalue the currency”, so to speak.

A more traditional book on magic is Mark Wilson’s Complete Course in Magic. This 512 page book reveals details of card tricks, coin tricks, handkerchief tricks and all sorts of other conjuring tricks. It gets a five star rating on Amazon and is probably the only book on magic you will ever need.

Magic Tricks Revealed Free Online

There is no shortage of websites revealing magic tricks free of charge. There seems to be a particular fascination with revealing the secrets of magician David Blaine. It is not hard to see why – Blaine is a popular and controversial figure, and his name on a website is clearly designed to increase traffic.

The website goodtricks.com has an entire section devoted to what it calls “David Blaine style street magic”. There is also a page for Criss Angel tricks, featuring YouTube videos of the Greek-American TV magician explaining some of his more popular tricks.

Street magic, also called guerilla magic, is a form of magic performed in a public place, often in a “hit and run” style on an unsuspecting audience. It was first popularized by Blaine, which is why his name appears on so many websites.

One 18-page PDF document called David Blaine’s Magic Revealed shows the secret to many of Blaine’s most popular illusions. It reveals how to create the illusion of levitation, appear to twist your arm 360 degrees, push a cigarette through a quarter and resurrect a fly from the dead, among other tricks. For such a short book, it contains a wealth of material. It is well worth studying if you want to impress your friends.

Websites abound on the Internet to tell you, free of charge, magic card trick secrets. In this article, we will look at some of the top sites.

Free Magic Card Tricks from TrickMagic.com

TrickMagic.com contains a comprehensive collection of card tricks, as well as more general articles on the rules of magic tricks, with titles like “What Magic Should Be”; “The Psychology of Magic” and “Should You make Your Magic Look Easy or Hard?”

The tricks are described and the descriptions are illustrated with extensive photographs. For a few dollars, you can download online videos of the tricks for even clearer instructions.

Free Magic Card Tricks from ExpertVillage.com

Expert Village is an online video library with over 120,000 videos offering instruction in everything from Chinese dining etiquette to how to milk a nanny goat. They have an entire section on card tricks, with 15 expert videos showing how to perform the fundamentals of card tricks. The videos can be viewed individually or continuously as a playlist. They focus more on general techniques than individual tricks, though there are a couple of simple tricks illustrated.

The course, presented by professional magician Brandon Nowasky, starts with a video showing you how to select the best cards to use in magic tricks. From there, it proceeds to illustrate techniques such as the double lift, the pinky break and the false cut. The videos last about two minutes each and so the entire playlist can be viewed in half an hour or so. The videos are free to view, but many of them are preceded by commercials in order to pay the site’s expenses.

Free Magic Card Tricks from Blifaloo

Blifaloo is a website featuring online games, optical illusions and other methods of “Temporary Boredom Relief”, to quote the site’s slogan. The tricks are divided into easy and advanced, with a separate section for sleights and flourishes. New tricks are added frequently, so it pays to check back regularly.

The tricks are described mostly in text form, with a few line illustrations. The easy tricks start with the basic card bender trick, whereby the would be magician appears to use the power of his or her mind to make a card bend without touching it. From there, the site progresses to more difficult tricks such as the “Talking Cards” trick, where you can pretend to let a deck of cards whisper in your ear which card your mark has picked. The sleights and flourishes are basic moves that can be adapted into several different tricks. The text based approach makes them a little more difficult to learn than more visual sites, but the descriptions are very clear, and with a bit of practice, you should be able to master all sorts of card tricks with which to impress your friends.
